8 Acids You NEED In Your Skincare Regime

When you think of acid, you probably immediately think of something harsh, drying, and overly exfoliating. I feel like this is why many people keep their distance from any facial product containing acid, because they feel like it will do more harm than good. Let me be the one to tell you, this couldn’t be further from the truth! Each and every one of us needs at least one acid in our skincare regime to help improve the quality of our skin. So… if your beauty routine just hasn’t been working for you lately or you are looking for that extra boost of something, you may just need to incorporate an acid that is holding all of the ingredients your skin is lacking!

So… with that being said, I want to talk about the most commonly used acid: salicylic acid, most commonly known as the zit zapper. I feel like anyone who cares about their skin in the slightest knows about salicylic acid. Any product that is specifically used for acne prone skin will most likely contain salicylic acid because it is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and well…a zit zapper.

So, the point of this post is to give a little info on the other, less well-known acids that are great for your skin. There are countless acids that contain beneficial properties for your skin, but here are five that you may need to incorporate into your skincare routine, depending on your skin type!

  1. Glycolic

Made from sugarcane, glycolic acid is literally desert for your skin. It has truly transformed my skin for the better and I highly recommend that if you’re not already using it, begin now! While it is great for diminishing and preventing acne, it can be used by anyone with any skin type. Glycolic acid is a fantastic way to exfoliate the dead skin off your face in the most gentle way possible. If you want to even your skin tone, reduce your fine lines and wrinkles, prevent acne, and make your skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom, this is your answer!

   2.   Hyaluronic

This acid has been popping up a lot recently, especially now that we have learned Madonna’s secret to red carpet ready skin: the oxygen facial. While hyaluronic acid isn’t quite as expensive as the $200-$400 facial, it is a very similar and incredible option for gradually plumping and hydrating your skin because it is solely for the purpose of retaining and locking in moisture. If you are suffering from dull, tired skin and want to beam with a radiant, glow, I would recommend any product containing this acid as a boost.

Just a tip: Fill a spray bottle with water and spritz it on your face before applying your product contains hyaluronic acid.

     3. Lactic

Lactic acid holds many of the same properties as glycolic acid, however, rather than coming from sugarcane, it comes from milk, meaning it is even more gentle than glycolic acid. This acid is perfect  for those of you who have sensitive skin and are looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles while evening out your skin tone.

Here is one product that contains only lactic acid. Yes, I know it is very pricey and you can definitely find a cheaper one, this is just one that works extremely well for me and that I can’t give up.

4. Malic

Malic acid might have been used on you during one of those horrible trips to the dentist. It is commonly seen in a lot of dental products because it kills the bacteria inside your mouth. It does the same thing when applied to your skin. If you have a lot of acne and want to unclog your pores and clear out the build-up of sebum , this is the acid for you. (I do not recommend this for sensitive skin!)

5. Ferulic

Been out in the hot sun playing a sport every day like me? Scared to face the consequences of this later on? You may want to invest in a product containing ferulic acid, that targets fine lines, wrinkles, and any symptom of sun damage.
